Terror, Installation View, 2002
Acrylic, Mirror, Blood, Gunpowder, Bullet Shells
As one approaches the space, one is confronted with a linear path of mirror that crosses from one wall onto the floor then onto the next, much like an inverted arch. The mirror is installed vertically across two walls that face each other, spanning from floor to ceiling. The entire space is neutral upon which the underlying path is painted white, which can only be seen under broken parts of the path. On both sides, the mirror faces itself as well as reflects the viewer as he/she crosses the threshold. The path begins as unbroken mirror with blood written words; Aroused, Mad, and Scared: three words that were submitted by a state prisoner convicted to three lifetime sentences for murder. This was a response to an essay in which I posed the question, "What three emotions did you experience/feel during the act of murder?"
The unbroken path then progresses and transforms into a shattered path onto which there are fallen pieces as well as pieces that remain together in formations left by impact. After crossing the threshold, the viewer then is confronted with a pane of a half broken mirror. Gunpowder has been poured upon the solid mirror and gun shells upon its absence, the broken side.
